morro bay running race Rock to Pier12 • 45th Annual Rock to Pier Run :: This 6 mile event is held entirely on the beach from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier and is open to participants of all ages and abilities. Registation will begin on May 5, 2014. Proceeds from this event will used for Morro Bay Recreation and Parks’ Youth Sports programs. cayucos portuguese celebration19-20 • 2014 Portuguese Celebration and Parade:: 90th Annual Portuguese Celebration will assemble to celebrate an over 700 year-old tradition brought from the Azores by pioneering Portuguese families. This weekend celebration will take place at the Veterans Memorial Building at the foot of the pier in Cayucos, CA.
The festivities will begin Saturday at 5-8pm with Linguica Sandwiches ($5 until sold out). Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 6:30pm. Dancing by Lightning & Whispers (Traditional Portuguese Folk Dance and American music) from 7:00 to 11:00pm, with Grand March showcasing the queens at 8:00pm. All of these events are open to the public.
Sunday will commence at the Veterans Building with the parade of Queens and their courts, from all over California at 10:30am. The parade will march to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 11:00am mass where the coronation Senior and Junior Queen will take place. These 2014 Queens will lead the parade back to the Veterans Building where there will be free Sopas from 11:30am to 2:00pm. 12-13 • Santa Barbara French Festival ::n addition to all the other fun, the French Festival is also a dance and music festival - and all the entertainment is free! Each day at 11:00 am the entertainment kicks off on three different stages and continues non-stop until 7:00 pm. The stages will be filled with dance and music from more than 30 different acts. The entertainment will include vocalists and bands, performance and instruction, incorporating the wide cultural influences that the French have had including French Polynesia, African, Cajun and so much more. We have welcomed everything from can-can to belly dancing, cajun music to African drummers. 1 • Hike Morro Bay :: At 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, hikers will gather at Morro Rock for 1st Hike Morro Bay. The first event of Morro Bay’s Landmark & Legacy year, this easy walk along a section of the California Coastal Trail is being held in conjunction with the California State Parks 150th anniversary celebration.
The free, family-friendly walk, led by State Parks docents, will head north along the beach during one of the lowest tides of the year. Hikers can gaze out across the blue Pacific, soak in the sights and sounds of the crashing surf and observe the wide variety of birds and sea creatures that make the Central Coast their winter home. Then steer toward Morro Bay for the highly anticipated return visit of the majestic tall-ship Lady Washington as well as the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain. During their stay, the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will be offering walk-on tours and two options for sailing excursions. Crewin 18th century costumes will welcome visitor’s dockside for ship handling demonstrations, sea shanty singing and story telling. TBA • Annual Cruisin' Morro Bay Car Show :: Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show returns for the 17th time in 2014! Starting Thursday evening, rare cars will begin arriving in Morro Bay for registration. On Friday, secure a spot on Main Street for Cruise Night as classics and other rare cars cruise past. Continue the party on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and talk with the car owners.
